Classic Cut-Up

In moments of fight or flight, it’s imperative to make a snap decision – instinctual, or not – and follow through.  In 2008, Cadillac, was in the same situation and challenged the German competition with the creation of the CTS-V Sedan:  a high-performance, mid-size luxury powerhouse.  Not one to stop while ahead, Cadillac expanded on that successful formula and increased its racing cred with the CTS-V Coupe.

From the outside, the CTS-V Coupe’s design follows Cadillac’s Art and Science design philosophy, although the classic hardtop styling (long hood, short deck) is a departure from the CTS-V Sedan.  A unique grille that doubles the car’s air intake volume leads to a roofline with no conventional B-pillar and touch-pad operation for the doors.   A shorter and lower profile – not to mention a wider rear track – gives the Coupe a more aggressive connection to the tarmac.  The signature vertical lighting and high-mounted center stop lamp that functions as a rear spoiler, and unique twin exhaust outlets (centred inside the rear fascia) finishes off the exterior design.

The CTS-V Coupe employs the LSA 6.2L supercharged V-8 engine also found on the CTS-V Sedan. Rated at 556 horsepower and 551 pound feet of torque, it is the most powerful engine offered in Cadillac’s history and propels the CTS-V Coupe from 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds.  Hear the rolling rumble?  Think of it as thunder under the hood.

A pair of six-speed transmissions is offered in the CTS-V Coupe: a Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual with a dual-disc clutch, and a Hydra-Matic 6L90 six-speed automatic with paddle-shift control (with Performance Algorithm Shifting, programmed to provide a performance-oriented shift pattern during sustained high-performance driving).

Whether on the streets or at the racetrack, Cadillac’s landmark Magnetic Ride Control (the world’s fastest-reacting suspension technology) keeps the car’s ride in check.  Electronic sensors at all four wheels literally “read the road” every millisecond, making constant damping adjustments to create virtually instantaneous and extremely precise control of body motions.

Lightweight Brembo brakes are at all four corners and include powerful, slotted and vented rotors (to help with cooling while eliminating fade) with six-piston calipers in the front and four-piston calipers in the rear.  Michelin’s acclaimed Pilot Sport PS2 summer tires and 19-inch alloy wheels support high levels of grip in track conditions, while also affording comfortable performance on normal roads.

Combined with the suspension, every component works in tandem to achieve a level of composed during hard cornering, acceleration, braking and other dynamic maneuvers.

The 2+2 cabin is finished with performance and luxury in mind.  Keeping the driver in place are Recaro performance driving seats (optional) that provide excellent support for spirited driving.   Hand-stitched details wrap the instrument panel, door trim and center console, microfiber covers the steering wheel, seat inserts and shifter, and Obsidian black trim spruces up the integrated center stack, center console and doors.

But, it’s not only about textures.  Also included in the V-Series are a 40-gigabyte hard drive, advanced navigation system with a deployable screen and Bose digital surround audio, as well as factory-installed Bluetooth phone integration.

Aimed at driving enthusiasts, the Cadillac CTS-V Coupe wraps technology and whip-neck performance with a sense of luxury and comfort in one sharp-edged package. A very compelling choice for luxury sports car consumers.  Competitors, beware.
